Under New Management

Congratulations to all of the new officers, but especially Ryan Riehm, who shall be taking over as webmaster for the coming year. Yes, Ryan Riehm the man who nuked Rwanda in the historical committee at BOSMUN will be running the website. I myself will have moved on to college and will never ever be posting again ever. So you better read this, because it will be the last thing you hear from me (well on this website anyway). Thank you to all of you who took the time to read the website posts and keep up to date with the important info that I made available to you. It means a lot to me. I became the webmaster after i noted all the cool things that could be done with the website that the Secretary at the time, Kevin Moeller, did not do. The Website has come a long way since those days and hopefully still has a ways to go. So long to all of you who actually paid attention to me and good luck in the 2010-2011 School Year!!!  

So You Want To Be a Webmaster

To any of you who are considering taking an officer position next year: I am a Senior, so next year I will be gone. If you want my job come talk to me. This is a great job, especially if you are an underclassman and want some experience. Don't be shy if ou don't know much about computers. I'm perfectly willing to show you the ropes!

Friday Meeting

This is a reminder that this Friday, March 26th, there will be a meeting at 7:15 A.M. in Ms. Delzani's room. You position papers and $35.00 checks are due at this time. If you are having trouble writing your position papers, try using the links on the sidebar. These links are also where you will find the topics for you position papers. Please make efficient use of the time you have before the conference.

Meeting Friday

There is a meeting this Friday March 12th at 7:15 A.M. in Ms. Delzani's room. This meeting is mandatory. Do not come late.

Spring CSU Conference

For those of you who missed the mandatory meeting after school today, be advised that you must tell Ms. Delzani that you are interested in going to the CSU conference by TOMORROW or YOU WILL NOT GO. The CSU conference is the Wednesday and Thursday of the week after Spring Break. There will be a fee of $35.00 due March 29th to Ms. Delzani.

New Position Paper Info

Here are the Steps you should take when working on your position papers

• STEP ONE: Go to http://www.bosmun.org/main.php?p=resources
• STEP TWO: Actually READ the four steps- this will answer many of your questions
• STEP THREE: Move your mouse over to the "Committees" tab
• STEP FOUR: Locate your specific committee type (For example, my committee is United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. I would click "Specialized".)
• STEP FIVE: Click on your specific committee and read the brief description.
• STEP SIX: Click on the Backround guide- there will be a word document which arises and requires a password. The password is cobra07.
• STEP SEVEN: Read the information provided to you and begin formulating your position papers (You will do two of them. However, it appears that they only have the first topic up).
• STEP EIGHT: Consult the position paper guidelines below
• STEP NINE: E-mail me with any questions you have (please do this after reading all of the materials you've been presented with)
• STEP TEN: Be at the meeting next friday (January 29th) at 7:15AM to discuss papers and other important details for Boston. The meeting is mandatory.

Position Paper Guidelines:

Position Papers are the published work of a delegation outlining country specific information related to the topic area at hand and an official position and plan toward resolving the problem. As such, each delegate should send one paper on each topic. In most cases, this means each delegate will need to write one paper on Topic A and one paper on Topic B.

Position papers should

• utilize size 12 Times New Roman font
• be in black print only
• have the Committee, Topic Area, Country, and Delegate headings in the upper left corner of the page
• appear untitled
• be one page in length (single spaced)

As a stylistic suggestion, refer to what your country hopes to achieve and not you, the delegate. For instance:

“Her Majesty’s Government desires…,” “The people of Bolivia would like to see…,” or “The Kingdom of Spain believes…,”

would be appropriate in place of:

“I want…,” “we feel…”

Position Papers should follow the formatting guidelines stipulated by the Secretariat. However, with regards to content, delegates have considerable freedom. Most Position Papers are organized in a fashion similar to that outlined below.

• Paragraph 1 – Background of the topic with relation to the Member State
• Paragraph 2 – Official position of the Member State
• Paragraph 3 – Solutions to the problem that are amenable to the Member State

Topic Area A: The Situation in the Middle East

Country: Peru

Delegate: Ms. Manasi Raveendran

The Conflict in the Middle East has escalated and has become an issue of worldwide concern, especially since 9/11. One of the principal causes of terrorism is the resentment of the Arab world toward the West, especially the United States. This resentment can be seen in terrorist attacks directed to western countries and the lack of cooperation of Arab countries toward the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Instability in the region is a major world problem and an immediate solution is required.

Peru, as a country that has suffered from internal conflicts, war and authoritarian government, and knows the necessity of the international forces in peace dialogues. Peru, as a democratic nation, believes that multinational cooperation is required for solving this problem. Financial aid and investment in social development should be given to Palestine and its refugees. Developed nations should mediate dialogues between Israel and Palestine. These dialogues should be directed toward the acceptance of each other as independent and sovereign states the acceptance of the pare al fuego, and the acceptance of the borders of the Road Map. Peru does not believe that a regime change is necessary, and recognizes Palestinian government as legitimate. Also, Peru believes that Jerusalem should remain as a separate sovereign entity.

Peru is a developing nation that has suffered from social problems and poverty; for that
reason, it can understand the desperate situation of Palestine for international aid. Social problems are the origin of authoritarian regimes, underdevelopment and terrorism. Palestine needs humanitarian intervention to deal with the problem of refugees, investment for education and social changes, peacekeeping forces that guarantee its society a safe environment where it can develop, and aid for the construction of aqueducts in order to have access to clean water.

Peru strongly believes that Palestine does not require the presence of foreign troops inside its countries or developed nations fighting for their own interests inside its borders. Peru asks the United Nations and international organizations to be the ones in charge of Palestinian development. Peru considers it necessary that Syria and Lebanon comprise to maintain peace with Israel. This will make Israel feel more secure and will relax the control of its borders. Arab countries surrounding the region should compromise to act as peace keeping force, so Palestinians do not feel the constant threat of a powerful Israel. With the help of other Arab countries to preserve security, Palestinians will be more flexible in accepting Israel peace conditions. Finally, refugees should be allowed to go back to their territories inside Israel in exchange of no more terrorist attacks to Israel.

For the solution of this problem, the United States and the countries participating in the war of terror should refocus their objectives. The principal concern of this war should be to eliminate the causes of terrorism rather than armed intervention. The war of terror should promote social development and understanding between the nations in the Middle East. This will not only bring stability to the region, but will decrease the sentiment against USA and against Israel. The Arab world resentment is one of the principal causes of terrorism and of the prolongation of the Israeli-Palestine conflict. The US should remove part of its troops to demonstrate and Iran should be allowed to give help. Peru is aware that the solution of this conflict requires times and multinational efforts; for that reason, it looks forward to help the international community in what it can.

Trip Information

Here is some information about the trip:

We are flying with Continental Airlines. Flight #5952 leaves Friday, Feb. 19th at 7:30 A.M. YOU MUST ARRIVE AT THE CONTINENTAL TERMINAL NO LATER THAN 5:30 A.M.

There will be NO CHECKED BAGS, EVERYTHING MUST BE CARRY-ON. This is to reduce costs. Flight #1431 will arrive in Cleveland at 7:45 P.M. on Sunday, Feb. 21st.

There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Wednesday Feb. 3rd at 7:00 P.M.

Additionally, you will find two new elements have been added to the sidebar on your right. One is a list of links pertaining to the trip, including the conference and hotel websites. The other is a list of upcoming deadlines for the remaining deposits. PLEASE NOTE that the next deadline for $100 is THURSDAY.
